Northampton Carp Fishing

Carp fishing in Northampton usually consists of the "Nene Valley" scene, carp to high 40's and rarely over 5 anglers per lake. But away from the highly priced syndicates with hundreds of waiting names to get on them are the day ticket waters where the average carp fisherman can be found.

This website will discuss the in's and out's of those day ticket venues where 90% of carp fisherman are located, the likes of Elsons lake at Stawick and Bluebell Lakes will be mentioned heavily on both my info pages, catch reports and in the blogs.

All Round Carp Fishing Information and Venues

So Who Am I?

I'm Danny Chapman, an avid carp fisherman in Northampton. And this is my info site for all anglers in and around the Midlands. I noticed a lack of info on tactics, venues and catch reports for all the local lakes, pits and ponds and so i produced this site.

Feel free to leave me some comments on the blog section of the site, latest posts listed below!!!

Manvells Lake (The Return of Ace)

by Danny on November 4, 2009 0 Comments

In typical fashion the likely lads of Ace and Chappers will be turning up at the smallest 30lb carp holding lake in the worrrrrld (clarkson esque) geared upto the max fresh and early on saturday morning.

With the new bivvy, bed chairs and sleeping bags lubed up and ready to be maximized in the winter chill, the kettle is sure to get a bashing throughout the night!

But its back to business on the Manvells puddle, and true to form the fawlty towers inspired name for this lake is sure to kick up a few suprises. With the local pleasure seekers still snoring in there pit and Chris Akabusy polishing his cane the likely lads will be scoping out the inhabitants of the goldfish bowl!

Tactics are short and sweet, standard drop off bolt rigs to short hair rigged mounted boilie/tiger combo's with the now world renowned bait ...

Elsons Lake Stanwick

by Danny on October 22, 2009 0 Comments

Stanwick Fisheries is quite a secluded gem in the Northampton fishing crown, located just outside Rushden, off the A45 it isnt particular obvious for passing fisherman the monsters that lurk in the depth's of Elsons and Roman lake.

Stanwick Fishery - Elsons Lake

I will start with Roman as i am yet to fish it, the syndicate is limited annually to a small number of anglers and the waiting list is long and full. Though there are carp to over 40lb, tench and bream well into double figures and some collosal pike to be found in the weed infested crystal clear lake, the wait could be worth it!!

Elsons, the junior to Roman lays right in the heart of Stanwick fisheries, limited to 12 anglers per day with pre-booking advisable in the summer months or at weekends. With carp to 40lb and a similar stamp of fish to that of ...

Walgrave Part 3 (Jurassic Park Tours)

by Danny on October 21, 2009 0 Comments

The clock hit 3pm, with no carp to our name, some consilation for us was that only 2 carp had been caught on the lake (weeners at that). But never the less a new approach was the aim for the cold evening shift!

After i quick walk down the other side of the lake i soon realised why we had seen no movement from carp all day, the other end was literally heaving with fish, reeds twitching, fish topping, bubbles under the overhangs, it was all there plain to see. So grabbing my bait bucket and swiftly informing Ace of the new intel, i strolled down the other end of the lake to bait a few spots i had noted earlier in the day, 6-8 handfulls of bait later i sat back and waited as i concentrated over the half a dozen spots i had baited right under the near ...

Walgrave Part 2 (Contemplation and T-Rex)

by Danny on October 20, 2009 0 Comments

After a carfeully quiet baiting up with or standard mix of crushed boilie, tigers, hemp, pellets and our secret additives we slowly placed our heaths (ledgers) precisely over the desired area, we sat confident of some early action.

2 hours passed with little more than a goldfish flaunting around over our baited spot! Though through observation we could clearly see clouds and obvious fish movement around the baited spot...so we waited it out in hope.

A couple more hours passed by and while the T-Rex like birdlife at Manvells Farm Fishing were entertaining us enormously through their constant child like advances towards our bait buckets, there was still no movement!!!

A change of plan was a must, with my freshly tied Ussain Bolt Rig ready with a pink flouro, surrounded by a tight bag of white amber boilies i casullay flicked under-arm around a rod length or two off ...

Northampton Fishing Venues

Manvells Farm Lake. Walgrave (Part1 - The Arrival)

On saturday me and my fishing partner (aka Ace) made the short leap over to Walgrave in Northampton to visit a miniscule lake we had heard rumours about!

"a tiny farm lake with carp to 36lb?" was the rumour, "this is something i have to see" my response.

On the face of it Manvell's is far to small to hide that size of fish, but pearing through the wardens hut soon put my doubts to rest, the pics showing pristine carp to over 30lb were there for all to see. And so we began shipping the richard (gear) out the car!

After a lap (around 30 seconds) we decided to pitch up in what the cafe owner called "the spot where noone fishes because of too many snags" perfect we thought!

Castle ashby. (Frozen nipples and winter whales.)

A while has past since the breaking up of the greatest fishing combo since captain birdseye and huck finn. A long icey spell over our lakes in northampton forced me to game and chapman to get married. Loaded with 2 shiney daiwa Ss 3000s and more end tackle than delroy senior i had again aquired the fishing bug. A brief recce tour of my chosen lake castle ashby Scotland pond uncovered a tough time for the lake not many carp had graced the banks and none of any size. My plan was simple, head to the corner where the fat and retarded would not go and catch some carp. At the crack of 5:30am i was up and by 6:15 i had managed to drag my self out of bed. By 7:15 i was on the lake not an angler in sight.... it was still pitch black. I scoped the lake for any signs of life but as i feared the winter chill had taken the life out of the carp. I opted for a little and often bait approach, a simple hair rig was tied using camo braid and a small size 10 korda wide gape hook, a long hair is also issued as with all my fishing, this was finished with some rig putty.I used 4oz leads on this attempt but will be reducing this to 1.5oz to 2oz max, chances are rare in winter and i did not want to be scaring off my only chance. This was finished with a snowman rig, 1 rod using cell boilie topped with fake yellow corn and the other robin red squid scopex and a pink maple pop up on top of that, single pva meshed boilies were also attached simply to removed any chance of a hair tangle. My baiting strategy had worked on this venue before scoring me 2x 20lbs + in an afternoon, i scattered 15 baits in a 10 yard radius around my hook bait. The logic behind this, is that the fish cruise round picking up single baits and growing in confidence as each bait is eaten, also both baits were topped with a bright pop up just incase the fish were not in the mood for eating but carp being carp will pick up an interesting bait to investigate. The over use of tightly placed pva bags of boilies and pellets, by other anglers had led me to this way of baiting.

The day kicked off with some rain and cold, added to this i had forgotten my matches so i could not make a coffee...not a good start. A match had also sounded up near the car park which could have been good or bad. A few serious carp anglers had arrived on the scene as well, typically strolling around and looking for signs, with sub par standard rob tackle, 20kg of yum yum baits (fruity furter no doubt), 12oz leads and a hammer to bang there bivvy in. I was just questioning why i was there freezing my nads off, when in the corner of my eye i saw my line was on the move this swiftly turned into the best alarm clock on the planet. I was in!. The battle was over fast, the lethargic winter carp was a beauty, a scale perfect common had graced my net, 18lb 10oz was registered. My 1st carp of the year had arrived  and i was a happy chap. Simple baiting and sticking to basic tactics had aquired for another stunning double on a day when the matchmen and fellow carpers had blanked.
